Frequently asked questions

Why numbers and not names?

Because tryout data is about children. Tryoutpad never asks for a child's name, birth date, photo, school or contact, so none can leak from it. Players wear or carry a number, the director keeps the number-to-name sheet on paper, and every free-text box refuses email addresses, web addresses and phone numbers.

How are scores combined?

Each score becomes a number from 0 to 1, each evaluator's scores for a player are averaged with the criteria weights, and each evaluator's averages are evened out against their own habits within the age group, so harsh and generous scorers count the same. The evened-out values are averaged across evaluators and shown as 50 plus 10 times that average. How it works has the steps and a worked example.

What is evaluator spread?

How far apart the evaluators were on one player: 10 times the gap between the highest and lowest evened-out value. A spread of 15 or more is flagged in amber on the Board, because the evaluators saw that player very differently and the director may want another look.

What does a family see?

Their player's number and group, the average score for each criterion on the rubric's scale, how many evaluators scored the player, the club's next steps, and, if the club chooses, the team and the rank in the group. Never an evaluator's name or single score, the shown score, the spread or another player.

Can families see other players?

No. Each code opens one player's report and nothing else, and a code only works together with the club's report link. After 10 wrong codes in an hour, the device or network that typed them is paused for an hour; other families are not affected. Guessing spread over many places is stopped at 300 wrong codes an hour on one report link, and the club sees the count.

When do reports appear?

When the director closes scoring and presses Publish the reports. Before that a family's code says the club has not published reports yet. Reopening scoring hides the reports again until the next publish.

Can an evaluator change a score?

Yes, their own, as often as they like while scoring is open: they tap the number again and save. The newest save wins, even from two phones. Once the director closes scoring, nothing more can be saved. If the director reopens scoring, the published reports are hidden until the next publish, and from then on each report says on which date scoring was reopened, because its scores may have changed.

What if an evaluator scores only a few players?

A player counts for an evaluator once at least half the criteria are scored. An evaluator with fewer than 5 such players in a group is evened out against the whole group instead of their own average, and the Board says few scores. A player seen by fewer evaluators than the director asked for shows a grey note.

Can I use my own rubric?

The standard rubric is Technique, Movement, Game sense, Effort and Coachability, each weighted the same. You can set 1 to 12 criteria of your own instead, each weighted 1 to 5. The rubric locks when the first score is saved, so every score means the same thing.

How long is data kept?

A tryout becomes read-only once 30 days have passed since its date and since it was set up, and nothing has changed in it for 30 days. 365 days after the later of its date and the day it was set up, it is deleted with all its scores, codes and reports, with 7 days to restore it first and a notice on your tryouts page. A director can delete a tryout sooner, with the same 7 days. A date can be up to a year back and two years ahead, so a mistyped year is caught when it is typed.

Can I export?

Yes. Download everything on the account page gives one file with every tryout, player number, score, evaluator note and placement you own. The Reports tab also gives a CSV of every score with the shown score, spread, rank and team, for a spreadsheet.

What if signal drops at the field?

The evaluator keeps scoring. Each save is kept on the phone and sent when the signal returns, trying every 20 seconds while the page is open and every 2 minutes after 5 failures. The page shows how many are not sent yet. If scoring closes first, the page lists the unsent numbers to show the director.

Do I need an email address or a password?

No. The director signs in with a passkey: your phone or computer makes it with your fingerprint, face or screen lock. You can add up to 10 passkeys and you get a one-time recovery code. An email address is optional, for the one notice Scores are in.

Do evaluators or families need an account?

No. An evaluator opens their private link; a family opens the report link with their code. Neither signs in, and neither is ever emailed.

Can I install it on my phone?

Yes. On an iPhone or iPad, open the Share menu in Safari and choose Add to Home Screen. On other browsers use Install in the menu.

Is Tryoutpad connected to a league or a club?

Tryoutpad is not affiliated with any league, governing body, club or tryout software company. Clubs use it to run their own tryouts.
